It’s the 8th Day of Christmas, the 7th Day of Kwanzaa: Imani (Faith), the Kemeci Season of Proyet (Sowing) and the Discordian Season of Chaos begins. The Iroquois Confederation Midwinter Ceremony begins when the Great Bear is overhead and the new moon is seen. It’s Independence Day in Haiti.

St. Agatha’s Day (protector from starvation, fire)

St. Basil’s Day (patron of Monks, Education, Hospital Administrators, Esorcism)

St. Clarus’ Day (patron of Tailors and against myopia)

St. Telemachus’ Day

The New Moon (in Capricorn) is today, so it’s a great time to start new things you want to grow- not so hot if you want something to shrink, so you may want to put off your diet until the 15th. January comes rom Latin Januarius, honoring Janus, a Roman God. He presided over the Gates of Heaven, which the Christians later assigned to St. Peter. The Anglo-Saxons called it Aefter-Yule, and prior to that Wolf-monat. Charlemagne called it Wintarmanoth; in Finnish, the month of tammikuu means the “heart of the winter”. The Greek month was Gamelia. Egyptian Mekhir, Celtic Tree Calendar Beth.

It is said, whatever you do on New Year’s Day, you’ll do often in the coming year.

Displaying a new calendar before this day is considered very unlucky. The first person to come through your door on New Years is your “first footer”. It’s lucky for them to be dark haired, carry coal, bread, money and greenery, and you ask them to carry out a pan of ashes or dust to signify the departure of the old year.

It is said that if you look through a silk handkerchief at the new moon, which has never been washed, the number of moons you see will be the number of years which will pass until you’re married. But it is unlucky to see the new moon through a window.

To dream of your future husband, it is said that at the first appearance of the first new moon of the year you should go out and stand over the spars of a gate or stile and look at the moon saying:

All hail to thee moon, all hail to thee,
I prythee, good moon, reveal to me,
This night who my husband shall be.

The first week of January is New Year’s Resolution week.

Everything you do on this day has magical implications for the coming year. So don’t take anything out (even rubbish), lend money or pay bills. If you must carry something out, be sure to bring something else in first, preferably a coin concealed outside the previous night:

“Take out, then take in,

Bad luck will begin.

Take in, then take out,

Good luck comes about.”

Whatever you do on this day will be repeated throughout the year.

January is Alzheimer Awareness Month, Dried Cranberry and Raisin Month, and Financial Wellness Month.

Thank God It’s Monday Day, Clean Desk Day, and National Weigh-In Day. Basically, it’s the official end of the Christmas Holiday season, at yet, at the same time it’s the Beginning of Carnival Period (Epiphany to Shrove Tuesday- and I thought I was a party hound!).

In Japan it’s Nanakusa (7 Plants Festival), and Usokae (Bullfinch Exchange Day). In the Middle Ages they celebrated St. Distaff’s Day, but now it’s recognized as apochriphal, but it’s the day of St. Aldric (patron against asthma), St. Raymond (patron of lawyers), and St. Reinhold (patron of stone masons).

“Distaff Day

Partly work and partly play

Ye must on St Distaff’s day

From the plough soon free the team

Then come home and fodder them

If the Maids a-spinning go

Burn the flax and fire the tow

Bring in pails of water then

Let the Maids bewash the men

Give Saint Distaff all the right

Then bid Christmas sport goodnight

And next morrow, every one

To his own vocation.”

– Herrick, Hesperides 1648

Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8th, will be National English Toffee Day, National Bubble Bath Day, National Joy Germ Day (a modern construct, but I think it’s cool, as opposed to) Show and Tell Day at Work © (which is Ok, except for the copyright), and Man/Male Watcher’s Day. Some have January 8th as Rock ‘n’ Roll Day /Elvis Day. It’s Women’s Day Babin Den /Granny’s/Old Midwife’s Day, the Ancients celebrated

Justitia and the Feast of Aesclaupius; it’s the Old Druid New Year. Today is the feast day of St. Amalburga (patron against bruises) and St. Gudula (patron against toothaches).

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 9th, will be National Apricot Day, National Static Electricity Day, National Stepfather’s Day, Balloon Ascension Day, International Choreographers Day, Word Nerd Day, maybe Happy Dance Day, and there are several I’m less sure about: Play God Day, Virgin Sacrifice Day, Balloon Ascension Day, & Bash-a-Pom Day (so many sites just print what other sites have; I can’t fault them too much, I used to do that, but anyone who’s into holidays really should keep track of changes between the solar and lunar calendars!). In Ancient Rome they had the Agonalia / Dies Agonalis; the Greeks may have sacrificed to the Anemoi- Wind Gods. It’s St. Basilissa’s Day (patron of breast-feeding) and Feast of the Black Nazarene ,

The Northern Lights are supposed to be especially visible in Thursday morning, even in the lower 48. These conditions should last a while. It’s cold for being out pre-dawn.

This is National Folic Acid Awareness Week, and Elvis’ Birthday Celebration Week.

January is Diet Month*, Autism Awareness Month, Whale Watching Month,
and Poverty in America Month.
*I reiterate- don’t start until the full moon next week if you want to lose weight.

Joy Germ Day reminds me of an old movie from 1968 called What’s So Bad About Feeling Good? in which a virus made everyone feel good- and the economy collapsed because so much of the economy is based on people needing being made to feel better, so they had to kill it off. I’m going to have to go watch it on Youtube.)9

(on some calendars- others have it February 14, 2014. I think this is what happens when holidays are set by a combination of Lunation and Solar cycles. Different people pick different days. I have a similar split for Milad un Nabi and

Thai Pongal Similarly, some heathen sites have this as Midvinterblot, others call the winter Solstice Midwinter.
