December Holidays

DECEMBER (2013)

December is named “10th month” in Latin because the year used to start at the spring equinox. It was consecrated to Saturn, and the Saturnalia was the great holiday in the Roman world. The Winter Solstice occurs on the 21st (while that’s the shortest day of the year the earliest sunset occurs on ~St. Nicholas Day, and the latest sunrise on 12th Night). Anglo-Saxon’s called it Yulmonath (yule month), the Greeks called it the month of Poseidon. The birthstone is tourquoise (and other blue stones), the Flower is Narcissus (or Holly or Ivy). The Astrological sign is Sagittarius- until Yule, then it becomes Capricorn. The full moon in December (17th) is the Cold Moon.

St Thomas’ Eve (old calendar)- This is another eve for love charms. For a prophetic dream, stick a pin in the exact center of an onion and put eight more pins around the first in a circle while saying:

Good St Thomas, do me right

And let my true love come to-night

That I may see him in the face

And in my arms may him embrace.

Then sleep with the onion under your pillow. What I find interesting about this folk custom is that both onions and the circle surrounding a dot are sun symbols, so this seems to be a charm relating to the sun, which is born again on Winter Solstice.

In case you wondered why so many duplicate and clearly promotional “holidays”, presidents make about 150 of these national holidays a year. Petitions are introduced by their constituents (trade associations, PR firms, etc.) to honour industries, events, professions, and hobbies. Others, like Talk like a Pirate Day, just grow out of a fan base. The Wellcat website makes up a bunch of them, since they copyrighted them, I feel that they aren’t as valid as some others, YMMV.
